Assam: Police SI suspended for wearing skull-cap (Namaz cap) on duty

Assam Police Radio Organization (APRO) has suspended a sub-inspector for wearing skull cap during duty.

A photograph of SI Md Chouket Ali wearing a skull cap—a cap muslims wear for namaz prayer during duty went viral on social media.

The sub-inspector was posted at the APRO office in Dispur which is the state capital of Assam

He has been suspended on charges of “indiscipline”, “unbecoming behaviour” and violation of “uniform rule”.

A departmental probe has also been ordered against the officer and a show-cause notice has been served.

According to a media report, the photograph was clicked on November 7 at Hajo in Kamrup Rural district.

The suspension order was issued on Monday by the superintendent of police (communication), Headquarter-II.

“SI (Opr) 198331837 Md. Choukat Ali of APRO, MCC, Dispur is hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect until further order, for his indisciplined and unbecoming conduct, as he willfully violated the Uniform Rule which is serious indiscipline,” the order said.

The order further said: “Department proceeding is also drawn up against him under section 65 of Assam Police Act 2007 read with rule-66 of Assam Police Manual Pt-III and Article 311 of the Constitution of India and rule 7 of Assam Service (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1964 for his indisciplined and unbecoming conduct, rendering him until retention in the Police Force.”

Commenting on the matter, ADGP (Communication) SN Singh tweeted, “The Sub Inspector has been placed under suspension and a Departmental Proceeding is being initiated against him.”
