Two days after her 19-year-old daughter was killed, a 49-year-old woman succumbed to the serious wounds at a hospital in Srinagar in wee hours of Saturday, official sources said.

When a “dead shell” went off as they were cleaning collard greens, also known as ‘Haakh,’ and some forest veggies (‘longdi,’) kept inside a bag at their home in Sharkoot Villgam in the Taratpora Amargargh area of Handwara, the mother and daughter received serious injuries.

The duo had reportedly transported the “dead shell” along with the vegetables from a nearby wooded area on Tuesday, according to police on May 25, GNS, a news agency reported.

The next day (Wednesday), when they were cleaning the vegetables from within the bag, a large explosion occurred, injuring them severely, according to authorities.

Sara Begum (49), the wife of Ghulma Ahmad Rather, and her daughter Gulnaza Banu (19), were identified and taken to a local hospital in Handwara, where the adolescent girl died from her wounds almost immediately, while the middle-aged woman was rushed to Srinagar for specialised care.

Sara Begum died of her wounds in the Srinagar hospital in the early hours of today, according to official sources of The Chenab Times.

A police report has been made, and further investigations are being conducted. The family has received no recompense from the administration so far.
