Youth’s ‘brutal murder’ triggers protest in Rajouri

In Rajouri district, a 28-year-old youth was “murdered” after being stabbed while sleeping inside his residence by unknown person(s), prompting a protest by family members, relatives, and neighbours on Wednesday.

Protesters gathered on the Rajouri-Poonch highway, asking that those responsible for the event be brought to account.

According to reports, an unknown assailant(s) entered the residence of Ankush Kumar Sharma, son of Bachaan Kumar Sharma, in Chakli village late last night and stabbed him to death while he was sleeping about 1 a.m. After noticing the murder, the family caused a ruckus, however it was unclear if the assailant(s) departed before or after the family spotted Ankush dead.

A police party from the Chatyar police station arrived shortly after and discovered “weapons of offence.” The body was also taken into custody by the police team for medical and legal reasons.

A police officer who was present at the scene said that inquiries had begun. Locals claim that the “brutal murder” has sent shockwaves across the community, according to Kashmir-based news agency GNS.

Family members of the youth, together with relatives and neighbours, took to the road near Chakli in the morning and stopped the Rajouri-Poonch route. Protesters demanded quick punishment against those guilty for the “murder” by burning old vehicle tyres.

The protest was still continuing on when this report was written, despite higher-ranking personnel from the police and government attempting to urge the protestors to disperse so that traffic on the busy route could be restored.
