Scores of journalists were allegedly assaulted by police officers while executing their processional responsibilities at Jehangir Chowk in Srinagar on Tuesday.
Waseem Andrabi, a photojournalist with Hindustan Times, informed Kashmir-based news agency KNO that today’s Muharram procession at Jahangir Chowk was being covered by the media.
He said, however, that police officers from Shergari Police Station, commanded by Station House Officer (SHO) Aftab Ahmad, thrashed them for no apparent cause. He added, “We were even told that a FIR will be filed against us.”
Andrabi claimed that he was thrashed along with scores of other journalists while covering the Muharram parade today, which was thwarted by officials. He explained, “We were executing our professional obligations, which is not a crime.”
According to a viral video, Chenab Times received, a police official with name “Aaftab” on his police uniform thrashed media men, however, video authenticity yet to be verified.
