ABVP protests in Jammu over arrest of activists

Massive protests were conducted in Jammu on Friday by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad protesting alleged police violence and the detention of ABVP workers during a demonstration held here on August 26.

The protests interrupted traffic in Jammu city and on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, according to the police.

Protest Against oxygen project

ABVP has been opposing an oxygen plant project on the land given for the construction of a higher secondary school and a district hospital.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Jammu city on Friday, calling for the suspension of the Ramban SHO and a magisterial investigation into the police’s “thrashing” and detention of the group’s activists. They chanted anti-police slogans and sat on a dharna in the city for nearly two hours, obstructing traffic flow.

The police then detained a number of them and cleared the protest scene. “We took the precautionary measure of arresting them. “They have stopped traffic, thus this cannot be called a peaceful protest,” said Mohita Sharma, the city’s SP.

ABVP activists staged a demonstration on Thursday night to protest the construction of an oxygen plant on land set aside for the construction of a higher secondary school and a district hospital. The demonstration was also attended by BJP leaders.
