In a photo he tweeted, Bhupesh Baghel can be seen sitting on the floor.

Bhupesh Baghel, the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, was photographed sitting on the ground outside the Lucknow airport after being detained by police today amid widespread protests over eight deaths in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur district, around 130 kilometres away. Mr Baghel was on his way to the state capital to speak at a press conference.

“Without any instruction, I am being halted outside the Lucknow airport,” the 60-year-old Congress leader wrote in Hindi in a tweet.

The photo shows him wearing a white kurta-pyjama and sitting on the floor, surrounded by officers and his bodyguards.

The Congressman also posted a roughly one-minute video of himself speaking with officials. “Dhara 144 to Lakhimpur me hai. Hum Lakhimpur to jaa nahi rahe hain. Problem kya hai. (Prohibitory orders are in Lakhimpur, but we are not going there. So what’s the problem),” he asks a cop.

Padiye…padiye,” he is then seen telling another cop who starts reading an order amid the conversation.

Humko kyun roka ja raha hai. Main aapke Lakhimpur nahi ja raha hun,” he again says but he is told by officials that large gatherings are also banned in Lucknow.
