After Supporting Farmers, Maneka, Varun, Swamy expelled from top BJP body

In what is perceived as a loud assertion of the leadership’s authority, the BJP expelled Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy, the mother-son combo of Maneka and Varun Gandhi, and former Bajrang Dal firebrand Vinay Katiyar from the party’s national executive on Thursday.

Swamy and Varun’s exclusion, as well as that of Birendra Singh, a prominent inductee into the Congress after 2014, was seen as a result of their disagreement with the party’s stance: both had deviated from the official line to criticise the Centre’s response to protests against the three contentious farm laws.

Bengal has a strong presence in the body, with Mithun Chakraborty, Bharti Ghosh, Swapan Dasgupta, Anirban Ganguly, and Mukutmani Adhikari among the members. This is a clear indication that the party continues to see Bengal as a land of promise, despite the setback it suffered in the polls in May.

Smriti Irani, the minister for women and child development, has been re-instated in the new national executive, the first one set up by BJP leader JP Nadda, following a similar path to the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs. Jyotiraditya Scindia, a prominent import, and Dinesh Trivedi, a former Trinamool MP, are both members of the 80-member committee, which, along with the parliamentary board, is a crucial decision-making body.

Swamy had been taking potshots at the government’s actions for months, as well as targeting the party’s office-bearers. Though he avoided PM Modi, the carping had plainly worn down the patience of the leadership, which had previously shown tolerance in the face of such provocations.

This time, Union ministers Rao Inderjit Singh and Prahlad Patel were unable to secure a seat. Other notable exclusions include Dushyant Singh, the son of former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, and former Union minister Vijay Goel. Members of the deliberative council include Modi, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Nitin Gadkari, all of whom served as party chiefs, as well as party veterans LK Advani and M M Joshi.

Harsh Vardhan, Ravi Shankar Prasad, and Prakash Javadekar, who were recently removed from their positions as Union ministers, have been reinstated. Senior officials like as Piyush Goyal, Dharmendra Pradhan, and Nirmala Sitharaman have maintained their positions. The exclusion of Swamy and Varun Gandhi, as well as Birendra Singh, a notable inductee into the Congress after 2014, was perceived as a result of their opposition to the party’s position. Varun Gandhi and Birendra Singh had deviated from the official line by criticising the government’s response to the three farm laws demonstrations.
