South Carolina deputy injured, suspect killed in shootout, says authorities

During a gunfight in South Carolina on Friday, a sheriff’s officer was injured and an armed suspect was killed, according to authorities.

According to Fox 46 Charlotte, the incident happened at The Court at Redstone complex in Indian Land, North Carolina, about 20 miles south of Charlotte.

Deputies with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office were executing a search warrant at an apartment unit in connection with a missing person investigation, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. Shots were fired at various times.

According to officials, both the armed man and the deputy were injured. The alleged shooter died on the spot, while the deputy who was injured was brought to the hospital.

There were no additional injuries reported. The shooting on Friday was the 30th in the state this year involving a law enforcement officer. In South Carolina, there were 49 officer-involved shootings in 2020.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office was only involved in one of them.
