The US on Wednesday issued its first passport with an X gender marker as a step toward ensuring the fair treatment of LGBTQI+ citizens, regardless of their gender or sex.
As per new procedures, applicants can self-select their gender as “M” or “F” and will no longer require medical certification if either option does not apply to them.
Instead they can mark their gender as “X” which will be reflected on the passports.
