A hatemonger from Uttar Pradesh has been detained after threatening Muslim women with rape. Bajrang Muni Das, the head of Maharshi Shri Lakshman Das Udasin Ashram in Khairabad, was arrested by police in Sitapur, about 100 kilometres from Lucknow. The arrest comes 11 days after he made his frightening threats in front of the police during a religious procession.

Last Friday, a two-minute video of his speech on April 2, in which he is purportedly heard uttering rape threats, went viral, garnering harsh criticism from the National Commission on Women. Beside this, it is pertinent to mention, AltNews co-founder Muhammad Zubair exposed the Muni initially with video proof but no action was taken at that time. After which the incident was condemned by various non-Muslims organisations and politicians, after which the hatemonger was arrested aftet 11 days.

The National Commission for Women had sought hatemonger’s arrest, claiming that the police could not remain silent in the face of such remarks.

Following that, a First Information Report was filed against him. Bajrang Muni Das has been charged with making hate speech, making derogatory words, and sexual harassment under the Indian Penal Code.

A video of Bajrang Muni apologising appeared on social media just hours after the case was filed. “My argument has been conveyed incorrectly. I demand an unequivocal apology for the same,” he said.

There have been a series of disturbing hate speeches in recent months, including one in Haridwar, where open appeals to take up guns against Muslims and commit genocide were made.

Five former chiefs of the armed forces, as well as over a hundred other people, including bureaucrats and prominent citizens, wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the “open call of genocide of Indian Muslims,” urging them to protect our country’s integrity and security.

Yati Narsinghanand, the case’s main suspect who has been free on bail for more than a month, has delivered another hate speech in Delhi, in which he reiterated his call for the use of weapons against Muslims.

The Uttarakhand government has been asked to provide a progress report by April 22 by the Supreme Court, which is considering petitions seeking inquiry and action in hate speech instances.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who spoke on behalf of the petitioners, stated that on April 17, an event similar to Haridwar will be organised in Himachal Pradesh.
