At least six people were killed and at least 30 were injured when a shooter from a rooftop opened fire on a Fourth of July parade in a Chicago suburb on Monday, according to police. The attack also forced hundreds of marchers, parents pushing strollers, and kids riding bikes to flee in fear. After hours of searching by the police, the suspect was still at large.

People were told to take cover while officers searched for the offender, according to Highland Park Police Commander Chris O’Neill, the incident commander on the scene. A “very vigorous apprehension attempt” was in progress, he added in the late afternoon on Monday.

Police claimed to have taken a powerful weapon from the rooftop, and they are requesting anyone in the area with surveillance or phone video to turn it in.

Police in Highland Park were advising locals to stay indoors as they went door to door. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, and the FBI were assisting Highland Park Police.

The area’s other Fourth of July parades, including the one in Evanston, were postponed on Monday.
