CWG 2022: India’s Vikas Thakur wins silver in men’s 96kg weightlifting

At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, weightlifter Vikas Thakur won the silver medal in the men’s 96 kg category, continuing India’s amazing history in the sport.

Thakur lifted 346 kilogrammes in total weight. He successfully attempted a 155 kg best snatch and a 191 kg clean & jerk.

After the snatch round, he was ranked third with Fiji’s Rainibogi.

Thakur started with an effort of 187 kg in the clean & jerk round and was successful. Additionally, he gained 2 kg on the weightlifter from Fiji.

While the Fijian lifter was able to lift 188 kg in their second attempts, India’s Thakur lifted 191 kg.

Thakur then attempted the lift one last time with 198 kg, but was unsuccessful. This wasn’t important because he had already won the silver medal.

Vikas Thakur has now won three medals in a row at the Commonwealth Games. He earned a bronze medal in 2018 and a silver in 2014.

Don Opeloge of Samoa won the gold medal by lifting a total of 381 kg.
