Israel no longer partner of Palestine in peace process: Palestinian President

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the UN on Friday that Israel is purposefully obstructing the two-state solution and is no longer seen as a trustworthy partner in the peace process.

Abbas reiterated his complaints about Israel’s leadership and security apparatus, claiming that the Jewish state has treated residents of the West Bank and Gaza Strip with “complete impunity” and that Palestinians’ confidence in the likelihood of peace is “regressing.”

Israel “is, through its premeditated and deliberate policies, destroying the two-state solution,” the Palestinian Authority president said in a speech to the UN General Assembly.

“This proves unequivocally that Israel does not believe in peace,” he added.

“Therefore, we no longer have an Israeli partner to whom we can talk.”

Abbas, 87, said that Israel has been enforcing a policy of land eviction in the occupied territories and has given its forces “total freedom” to commit crimes against humanity or otherwise abuse Palestinians.

He said, “This is the truth: they are an apartheid regime.

Abbas accused that the United Nations was “protecting Israel” from such accountability when he demanded that the world hold Israel accountable “for the killings they have committed.”

In order to make Israel “bear its legal, political, moral, and financial duties,” he restated the Palestinians’ demand that Israel’s case be taken before the International Criminal Court.

The Palestinian Authority has been urged by the United States not to file a case with the ICC on the grounds that it lacks sovereignty and that the court unfairly targets out Israel.
