CBI arrests official for accepting bribe in J-K’s Samba

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a major bust in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, as it has caught a government official in the act of accepting a bribe. The accused, who has been identified as Gopal Raj Sharma, a Junior Assistant at the District Industries Centre (DIC), was caught by the CBI after receiving a complaint from an individual.

According to reports, the complainant had informed the CBI that Sharma had been demanding a bribe of Rs 20,000 in exchange for issuing a no objection certificate (NOC) to avail a loan subsidy. The individual had taken a loan of Rs 10 lakh from the State Bank of India (SBI) in Samba, under the Prime Minister’s Status Generation Programme (PMEGP), which was sponsored by the DIC in Samba. To avail the subsidy, the individual needed an NOC from the DIC, however, Sharma demanded a bribe in return. After some negotiations, the bribe was reduced to Rs 15,000.

The CBI sprang into action and laid a trap, catching Sharma red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 15,000 from the complainant. The CBI is also conducting searches on the premises of the accused. Sharma will now be produced before the Special Judge, CBI, Jammu.
