Punjab and Haryana HC notice to Punjab on plea seeking ‘release’ of Amritpal

The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued a notice to the Punjab government on a plea seeking the release of Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh. The habeas corpus plea was filed by Iman Singh Khara, the legal advisor of Waris Punjab De, who claimed that Amritpal was being held illegally by the police.

According to the plea, Amritpal was detained by the Punjab police and paramilitary forces from the Shahkot area in Jalandhar without any reason being given. It has been 24 hours since his detention and his family has not been informed, nor has he been produced before a court. The plea also claims that there is a danger to Amritpal’s life.

The high court bench of justice NS Shekahwat took up the matter for an urgent hearing on Sunday evening and issued a notice of motion on the plea for Tuesday. The plea also demanded the appointment of a warrant officer to visit the spot. However, the bench has not yet appointed a warrant officer, according to Punjab’s advocate general Vinod Ghai. The hearing took place at the house of justice Shekhawat.

The Punjab government has not yet responded to the plea seeking Amritpal’s release. The high court’s decision on Tuesday will be eagerly awaited by Amritpal’s family and supporters.
