Ravneet Kaur Appointed as Chairperson of Competition Commission of India

In a significant development, the government has recently appointed Ravneet Kaur as the Chairperson of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), ending a prolonged vacancy in this crucial regulatory position. The official order confirming Kaur’s appointment was released on May 15, and it marks an important step towards reinforcing the CCI’s role in promoting fair competition and safeguarding consumer interests.

Previously, the position of Chairperson had been vacant since October 2022, following the departure of Ashok Kumar Gupta. During this interim period, CCI Member Sangeeta Verma had been fulfilling the responsibilities of the Chairperson. However, with Ravneet Kaur assuming the role, the CCI can now benefit from her extensive experience and expertise in driving competition policy and enforcement.

Ravneet Kaur, a distinguished officer from the 1988 Punjab cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the CCI. Her appointment is expected to invigorate the organization and enable it to effectively address the complex challenges posed by rapidly evolving markets and the digital economy.

According to the official order, Ravneet Kaur’s tenure as Chairperson will last for a period of five years, starting from the date she assumes office. Alternatively, her term will conclude upon reaching the age of 65 years or upon further orders from the government, whichever comes first. This extended tenure allows Kaur to implement long-term strategies and contribute to the CCI’s mission of ensuring fair competition across various sectors.

The order also specifies that as Chairperson, Ravneet Kaur will receive a consolidated monthly salary of Rs 4,50,000 without the provision of a house and car. This move underscores the government’s commitment to attracting top talent and providing them with the necessary resources to carry out their duties effectively.
