Polluting Paradise in J&K’s Kishtwar: Construction Waste Plagues Chenab River, Locals Demand Action

The Rattle Hydroelectric Project in Drabhsalla, situated in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, has emerged as a grave concern for the local population. However, due to the fear of facing administrative repercussions, their voices are often suppressed, hindering their ability to raise concerns effectively. It is not only the Rattle project that poses a problem but also other projects in close proximity, as they contribute to pollution by disposing of construction waste into the river Chenab. This has had a detrimental impact on aquatic life in the region. Additionally, the establishment of crusher plants near schools is a cause for concern as it potentially jeopardizes the well-being of students. Despite objections raised by certain locals, the dumping of construction waste into the river Chenab continues unchecked, with no measures being taken to prevent this pollution. This lack of action perpetuates the environmental degradation and poses a significant threat to the ecological balance of the region. Urgent attention and intervention are required to address these issues and protect the well-being of the local community and the natural environment.
