Bihar: BJP Leader Resigns Citing Manipur Violence as Defamation of India; Blames PM’s Inaction

In a surprising turn of events, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state spokesperson from Bihar, Vinod Sharma, tendered his resignation from the party on Thursday, citing the recent ethnic violence in Manipur as the reason for his departure. Sharma expressed feeling ‘stigmatised’ to work under the BJP leadership in light of the shocking incident that unfolded in Manipur.

The violence in question involved the horrifying public humiliation of two women belonging to the Kuki community, who were shamefully paraded naked in broad daylight amidst a mob of approximately 800-1,000 men. This despicable incident has not only sent shockwaves across the nation but has also deeply impacted India’s image on the international stage, according to Sharma.

Expressing his dismay, Sharma criticized Manipur’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, for his shocking claim that ‘hundreds of similar incidents have taken place’ in the state. The BJP leader asserted that such a barbaric act has never been witnessed elsewhere, and he believes that it has brought immense shame to the country.

“I have resigned from BJP with a heavy heart. Manipur situation has defamed India,” Sharma stated.

In his letter addressed to BJP National President JP Nadda and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sharma expressed disappointment over the apparent lack of action taken by the Prime Minister’s office and accused PM Modi of being indifferent to the issue. “Still, the PM is sleeping, he doesn’t have the courage to sack CM Biren Singh,” Sharma remarked.

Revealing further insights into his decision, Sharma stated that he was asked by the party to debate in favor of the Manipur incident, a request that he vehemently denied. This incident highlighted the party’s apparent indifference to the well-being and safety of the citizens, especially women, which deeply troubled Sharma and led to his resignation.

The resignation of the BJP leader has sparked criticism not only from political rivals but also from within the party. Janata Dal (United) took the opportunity to denounce the BJP, with their official Twitter handle quoting Sharma’s words, where he allegedly expressed feeling self-conscious and stigmatised while working under the BJP leadership.
