National Conference Gains “Plough” Symbol Back for Kargil Polls Following Supreme Court Ruling

In a significant development, the administration of the Ladakh Union Territory has decided to reserve the “plough” symbol for the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference Party in the upcoming 5th Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil elections. This decision comes after the Supreme Court of India intervened in the matter, putting an end to a protracted legal battle.

The administration’s announcement was made in response to the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s order dated September 6, 2023, in Civil Appeal No. 5707 of 2023 (SLP No. 18727 of 2023). A notification was issued last night, officially designating the “Plough” symbol for the National Conference.

The move follows a contentious dispute over the election symbol, which had created uncertainty in the lead-up to the Kargil polls. The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, will now proceed with elections using this resolved symbol.

“In pursuance to the order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, the symbol ‘Plough’ is hereby reserved for the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference Party for the ensuing elections to the 5th Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil,” stated the official notification.

In addition to resolving the symbol issue, the administration also released a fresh notification, which indicated a change in the election date. Initially scheduled for September 10, the voting for 26 seats will now take place on October 04, 2023, according to the revised notification.
