In a recent development, the Srinagar police have taken into custody an SMC (Srinagar Municipal Corporation) corporator, identified as Aqib Ahmed Renzu, residing in the Nishat area of Srinagar, central Kashmir. Mr. Renzu faces serious charges including sexual harassment, outraging modesty, and online stalking.
The arrest comes after a diligent investigation led by police, prompted by the courageous actions of the victim involved. The case has been registered under FIR No 50/2023, invoking sections 354, 354A, and 354D of the Indian Penal Code. These sections pertain to offenses related to sexual harassment, outraging the modesty of a woman, and online stalking.
The Srinagar police, in a statement issued via official micro-blogging platform X, shared the details of the arrest, saying, “One SMC corporator Aqib Ahmed Renzu of Nishat Srinagar arrested for sexual harassment, outraging modesty, and online stalking. Strong technical evidences in this matter were produced by the brave victim. FIR No 50/2023 U/S 354, 354A, 354D registered in RM Bagh Police station.”
