Anticipation Mounts as Jammu and Kashmir Awaits Supreme Court Verdict on Article 370 Abrogation

In anticipation of the Supreme Court’s impending decision on the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, political leaders have articulated varying perspectives on the matter.

The five-judge constitutional bench, presided over by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, engaged in hearings involving different parties and the Union government, culminating in the eagerly awaited judgment scheduled for Monday.

Ravinder Raina, the BJP J&K unit president, emphasized the importance of respecting the Supreme Court’s decision on this contentious issue. In contrast, Mehbooba Mufti, president of the Peoples Democratic Party and former Chief Minister, expressed skepticism, stating that the decision is unlikely to favor the interests of the people and the country.

Omar Abdullah, the vice president of the National Conference and another former Chief Minister, highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the court’s decision, emphasizing the need to wait before determining the future course of action.

Sajad Gani Lone, president of the Peoples Conference, expressed optimism, hoping that the Supreme Court’s decision would align with the interests of the people in J&K. Muzaffar Shah of the Awami National Conference viewed the impending judgment as a test for both the constitution of the country and the Supreme Court itself.

While political leaders voiced their opinions, the common citizens of J&K eagerly anticipate the court’s decision on whether Article 370 and 35A will be permanently revoked or potentially restored in some form. Regardless of individual sentiments, there is a prevailing acknowledgment that the decision, emanating from a constitutional bench of five judges, holds both legal and constitutional validity.

Asgar Hussain, a resident of Chenab Valley, noted that irrespective of personal reactions, the decision must be accepted by everyone. He emphasized the authority of the constitutional bench, asserting that individuals, whether pleased or displeased, will need to acknowledge and adhere to the court’s ruling.
