A thick blanket of fog enveloped most of Kashmir, including Srinagar, on Thursday, as the region continues to experience a severe cold wave.
Temperatures dip further
- Srinagar: -3.3°C (1.2°C below normal)
- Qazigund: -3.8°C (1.5°C below normal)
- Pahalgam: -5.4°C (0.2°C below normal)
- Kokernag: -2.0°C (0.7°C above normal)
- Kupwara: -4.3°C (1.8°C below normal)
- Gulmarg: -2.6°C (3.6°C above normal)
- Jammu: 5.8°C (1.6°C below normal)
Visibility reduced, traffic disrupted
- Dense fog in many areas, particularly Srinagar, impacting visibility and slowing down traffic flow.
Chillai-Kalan continues
- Kashmir is currently in the midst of “Chillai-Kalan,” the 40-day period of harshest winter, which ends on January 30.
- Two subsequent winter periods, “Chillai-Khurd” and “Chillai-Bachha,” follow for a total of 70 days of winter.
Forecast
- Generally cloudy weather with possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches in the next 24 hours.
- Dry weather with moderate to dense fog expected till December 31st in Central Kashmir and surrounding areas.
- Possibility of light snow over higher reaches during the evening/night of December 31st.
- Dry weather expected on January 1-2.
- Light rain/snow possible at isolated places on January 3-4.
