A close call on the National Highway 244 near Thathri, Jammu and Kashmir, has reignited concerns over uncleared landslide debris from a February 2023 incident. While a load carrier accident today resulted in no injuries, residents highlighted the ongoing danger posed by the remaining debris, which has narrowed the highway to a single lane for over a year.
The incident occurred near the site of a major land subsidence event in Thathri last year, which affected approximately 300 people and rendered several structures unsafe. A team of geologists attributed the event to a combination of factors, including potential contributions from water seepage within the affected area.
According to Mohd Ashraf, a resident of Nayi Basti, the area directly impacted by the subsidence, there have been repeated requests for the complete removal of the landslide debris. “It’s like they’re waiting for a tragedy before they act,” Ashraf told The Chenab Times. “We’ve raised concerns countless times, but the debris just sits there, making the road a constant hazard.”
