The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Monday its readiness to conduct assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. This declaration comes on the heels of the Union Territory recording its highest voter turnout in four decades during the recently concluded 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, addressing a press conference in New Delhi, provided an overview of the seven-phase general elections that wrapped up on June 1. Kumar highlighted that Jammu and Kashmir registered an overall voter turnout of 58.58 percent, with the Kashmir Valley itself recording a 51.05 percent turnout. This significant participation underscores the region’s increasing engagement in the democratic process.
Kumar noted the peaceful conduct of the elections nationwide, including in Jammu and Kashmir, with no major incidents reported. This smooth execution is indicative of the robust security measures and thorough planning undertaken by the ECI.
The counting of votes, scheduled for tomorrow, is set to proceed under stringent security protocols across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir. As preparations for the vote count are finalized, exit polls have predicted a sweeping victory for the PM Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), forecasting the coalition to secure over 350 seats.
In Jammu and Kashmir, exit polls suggest the National Conference is likely to win all three Lok Sabha seats in the Kashmir Valley. In the Jammu division, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is projected to secure two seats, while the Congress is anticipated to win the sole Lok Sabha seat in Ladakh.
The ECI’s announcement regarding assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir comes at a pivotal moment, reflecting a significant step towards reinstating a fully functional democratic framework in the region. The high voter turnout and the orderly conduct of the recent elections are seen as positive indicators for the future electoral processes in the Union Territory.
As the nation awaits the final results of the 2024 general elections, the ECI’s readiness to facilitate assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir marks a crucial development in the region’s political landscape.
