July 2024 marks the seventh anniversary of The Chenab Times, a momentous occasion for our dedicated team and loyal readership. From our inception in July 2017 in Thathri, Doda, under the vision of our founder Anzer Ayoob, we have grown into a reputable multimedia news platform. Our focus on quality journalism over quantity has allowed us to cover hyper-local, national, and international issues that matter to our audience.
Founding Vision and Early Days
The Chenab Times was born out of a need to highlight the unique challenges and stories of the Chenab Valley. Anzer Ayoob envisioned a news outlet that would engage in community-building and cultural preservation, covering hyper-local issues often ignored by mainstream media. From the beginning, our mission was to provide in-depth reporting on development, infrastructure, and healthcare in the Chenab Valley.
Notable Achievements
Hyper-Local Reporting
Our commitment to hyper-local reporting has been unwavering. We have consistently provided detailed coverage of issues affecting the Chenab Valley, from infrastructure projects and healthcare challenges to environmental concerns and community events. This ground-level reporting has not only informed our local audience but also brought national attention to the region’s unique issues.
Multilingual News Initiative (MNI)
In January 2021, we launched the Multilingual News Initiative, a pioneering project aimed at preserving and promoting the linguistic diversity of the Chenab Valley. This initiative broadcasts news in lesser-known local languages, including Sarazi, Bhaderwahi, and Gojri, as well as the “Chenabich Kashir” dialect. This effort has been instrumental in raising awareness about these endangered languages and has been widely recognized for its cultural impact.
Cultural Preservation and Advocacy
The Chenab Times has been a strong advocate for cultural preservation. Through our in-depth analyses of protest literature, poetry, and short stories, we have provided a platform for everyday voices to be heard. Our focus on the cultural and linguistic heritage of the Chenab Valley has helped question traditional mindsets and entrenched viewpoints, promoting a more inclusive narrative.
Expanding Horizons: National and International Coverage
While our roots are deeply embedded in the Chenab Valley, The Chenab Times has also covered significant national and international issues through our articles. Our team of over 80 freelance journalists and writers, including former judges, has contributed to a diverse range of topics that resonate with our audience. This extensive network of contributors ensures that we provide comprehensive coverage on matters that matter, from local governance and cultural affairs to global events and trends.
Impact and Recognition
Over the years, The Chenab Times has received several accolades for its contributions to journalism and cultural preservation. In 2022, we were nominated for the “Best News Portal Award” by the Pahari Core Committee, an amalgamation of fifteen literary groups in Jammu and Kashmir, for our efforts in promoting local Pahari languages. This recognition underscores our commitment to quality journalism and our role in fostering a sense of identity and pride within the community.
The Road Ahead
As we celebrate our seventh anniversary, we remain committed to our founding principles of quality over quantity in journalism. We will continue to focus on hyper-local reporting, cultural preservation, and advocacy. Our goal is to expand our Multilingual News Initiative to cover even more languages and dialects, ensuring that no linguistic group in the Chenab Valley is left unrepresented.
A Message from Our Founder
Reflecting on our journey, Anzer Ayoob shares, “The past seven years have been a testament to the power of dedicated journalism in bringing about meaningful change. We started The Chenab Times to give a voice to the voiceless and to highlight the rich cultural tapestry of the Chenab Valley. As we look to the future, our mission remains the same: to inform, engage, and empower our community through quality journalism.”
The Chenab Times’ seventh anniversary is not just a celebration of our achievements but also a reaffirmation of our commitment to impactful journalism. We thank our dedicated team, our loyal readers, and the community for their unwavering support. Here’s to many more years of making a difference, one story at a time.
