In a significant step toward sustainable urban development, District Development Commissioner (DDC) Kishtwar, Sh. Rajesh Kumar Shavan (JKAS), finalized plans for the establishment of a “City Forest” on the outskirts of Kishtwar Town. This ambitious project aims to foster a greener urban landscape and enhance the ecological balance in the region.
The planning meeting, held at the District Commissioner’s office, brought together key officials and stakeholders from departments including Forest, Rural Development Department (RDD), Public Health Engineering (PHE), and Public Works Department (PWD), among others. The project, a vision of the Deputy Commissioner, represents a proactive measure to address the environmental impact of hydroelectric power projects in the district, creating a green oasis for the community.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kishtwar, Sh. Vijay Verma, provided a comprehensive overview of the City Forest Plan, detailing the afforestation initiative set to take place on 975 kanals of land near Kishtwar Town. According to Sh. Verma, the project will focus on extensive plantation, habitat creation, and enhancement of green cover, all aimed at improving air quality, supporting biodiversity, and establishing a recreational space for local residents.
DDC Kishtwar Sh. Shavan reviewed critical components of the afforestation plan, addressing infrastructure requirements for fencing, irrigation, and ongoing maintenance. He emphasized the need to create a self-sustaining ecosystem through strategic afforestation practices. To ensure the health of newly planted saplings, Sh. Shavan instructed all involved departments to prioritize the provision of essential services, such as a reliable water supply, for the City Forest.
The Deputy Commissioner underscored the importance of cross-departmental collaboration, urging all stakeholders to work in close coordination with a “war footing” approach to meet the project timeline. Stressing the broader ecological and social benefits, Sh. Shavan highlighted that the City Forest will contribute significantly to Kishtwar’s environmental resilience by mitigating urban heat, conserving biodiversity, and reducing pollution. He noted that the forest would serve as a natural recreational area, promoting wellness and environmental awareness among local communities.
Other key attendees included DFO Social Forestry, Sh. Sanjay Gupta; Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD), Sh. Phulail Singh; Executive Engineers from PHE and PWD; representatives from the Hydroelectric Power Projects (HEPP) authority, Chief Agriculture Officer (CAO), Chief Horticulture Officer (CHO), and other senior officials.
Concluding the session, Sh. Shavan reiterated his commitment to developing Kishtwar as an eco-friendly and sustainable town, with the City Forest Project as a cornerstone of this vision. This “Nagar Van” (City Forest) initiative, set to be located at the town’s entry point near Shalimar, is anticipated to play a pivotal role in balancing the environmental impact of ongoing industrial developments and fostering a green, resilient Kishtwar for future generations.
