The Government of India has instructed all states and union territories to complete a comprehensive survey for the next phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) by March 31, 2025. The program aims to construct an additional 2 crore houses in rural areas by 2028-29 as part of its broader “Housing for All” mission, according to a directive issued by the Ministry of Rural Development.
The directive was issued by Deputy Director General Gaya Prasad on December 27 and is also available on the PMAY-G portal. The development was confirmed by The Chenab Times.
The survey is being conducted using the Awaas+ 2024 mobile application at various places, which enables both assisted and self-surveys. The application uses face-based authentication to ensure data accuracy and the inclusion of eligible households. Officials said surveyors have been registered and deployed in Gram Panchayats, while citizens can also self-register through the app.
States and union territories have been urged to ensure all eligible households are covered, as the updated database will determine beneficiaries under the scheme.
The updated PMAY-G phase incorporates modified exclusion criteria approved by the Union Cabinet. The Ministry has also shared Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with states, outlining guidelines for conducting the survey efficiently.
The Ministry has set a firm deadline of March 31, 2025, for the completion of the survey. “Timely execution is crucial to ensuring no eligible household is left behind,” the directive stated.
The government plans to build 2 crore houses in rural India over the next five years, expanding the coverage of PMAY-G, which has already provided millions of homes in its earlier phases. Officials emphasized that the survey will form the foundation for this ambitious plan, ensuring housing support reaches underserved rural families.
The survey comes as part of India’s continued efforts to address housing inequities in rural regions, with the government relying on technological solutions to streamline and enhance transparency in the beneficiary identification process.
