No Non-Locals Issued Domicile Certificates in Magam, Narbal; 52 Granted in Beerwah on Marriage Basis: Govt

BUDGAM, March 14 – The government on Thursday informed the House that no non-local residents have been issued domicile certificates in Magam and Narbal areas of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

Minister for Health and Education, Sakina Itoo, stated this while responding to a query raised by Dr. Shafi Ahmad Wani. She informed the House that a total of 18,921 domicile certificates have been issued in Narbal and 26,277 in Magam. However, she emphasized that none of these were granted to non-local residents in the two tehsils.

Providing further details, the minister said that 62,343 domicile certificates have been issued in Beerwah, of which 52 were granted to non-local residents on the basis of marriage.

The issuance of domicile certificates has been a subject of scrutiny in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which allowed non-local residents to apply for residency rights in the region.
