JAMMU April 12 – A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army died on Friday after sustaining critical injuries during a gunbattle with suspected militants near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir, defence officials said.
The exchange of fire erupted in the early hours near a forward post in the Keri-Battal area when militants opened fire on an Army patrol, triggering a swift response from security forces.
The wounded JCO was airlifted to a military hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries, an official said, requesting anonymity. “Despite all medical efforts, he couldn’t survive,” the official told media.
The Army said the infiltration attempt was successfully repelled and a search operation was underway to ensure no militants remained in the area.
Security forces have heightened surveillance and strengthened positions along the LoC in the region, following a rise in infiltration attempts in recent weeks.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the incident.
