Jammu – Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday dissolved all organisational units of his Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), in what party insiders described as a strategic move aimed at overhauling the outfit following its lacklustre electoral performance.
“All party units, including state, provincial, zonal, district, and block-level committees, as well as the positions of chief spokesperson and other spokespersons, stand dissolved,” read an official statement issued by Bashir Arif, secretary to the DPAP chairman.
The decision, sources close to Azad said, is part of a plan to facilitate a “comprehensive restructuring of the party.” The statement confirmed that the committees will be reconstituted “in due course of time.”
Azad, a veteran politician and former Union Minister, floated the DPAP in 2022 after ending a decades-long association with the Indian National Congress. He positioned the party as a regional force aimed at representing the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
However, the DPAP failed to make an electoral impact. It drew a blank in its debut attempt during the Lok Sabha elections and later contested 23 out of 90 seats in the J&K Assembly polls without securing a single win.
The sweeping dissolution of party structures signals a recalibration of strategy as Azad seeks to revive his political fortunes in the region.
