Ramban, May 4 (The Chenab Times) – Three Army personnel were killed on Sunday after their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a 700-foot deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, officials said.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. near Battery Chashma along National Highway 44, when an Army truck, part of a convoy en route from Jammu to Srinagar, veered off the mountainous road and fell into the gorge, the officials told media.
A joint rescue operation was immediately launched by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local volunteers. All three soldiers travelling in the vehicle were found dead at the scene.
The deceased were identified as Sepoy Amit Kumar, Sepoy Sujeet Kumar, and Sepoy Man Bahadur. Their bodies were being recovered from the gorge as of Sunday afternoon.
“The impact of the crash was so severe that the vehicle was reduced to a mangled heap of metal,” one official said, requesting anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to media.
The Army has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
The mountainous stretch between Ramban and Banihal on NH-44 is notorious for fatal accidents due to narrow roads, sharp turns, and unpredictable weather.
