Poonch, May 7 (The Chenab Times) – At least ten civilians were killed and 33 others injured in heavy cross-border shelling by Pakistani forces along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Wednesday, officials said.
The shelling struck multiple villages in the Mendhar and Mankote sectors, causing extensive damage to property and triggering a swift response from the Indian Army.
“Due to heavy shelling by Pakistani troopers, 10 people have lost their lives, while around 33 people are injured, many of whom are in critical condition,” official sources said, according to news agency JKNS.
The injured have been transported to the district hospital in Poonch, where they are receiving treatment. Authorities said several of the wounded are in serious condition and are being closely monitored.
Local officials reported significant structural damage in the affected areas, with multiple homes either destroyed or heavily damaged. Evacuation efforts are underway, and emergency response teams have been deployed to provide relief and ensure civilian safety.
“All schools and colleges in the region have been closed as a precautionary measure,” a senior district official said. “Residents have been advised to stay indoors and follow instructions issued by authorities.”
The Indian Army is actively responding to the shelling, and security forces remain on high alert. Authorities are continuing to assess the situation and have assured full support to the affected families.
Monitoring efforts are ongoing as officials work to prevent further casualties amid heightened tensions along the LoC.
