J&K Student Drowns in Bathinda Stream, Dies After Two Days in Hospital

Bathinda, May 28: A 22-year-old student from Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district passed away on Tuesday afternoon after battling for life for nearly two days following a drowning incident in a stream near Bathinda, Punjab.

The deceased, identified as Asgar Irshad, son of Irshad Ahmed Zarger and a resident of Detayas Chilly Bala in Bhalessa region of Doda, was pursuing a Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed) degree at Guru Kashi University, Bathinda.

Local sources told The Chenab Times that Mr. Irshad, along with two friends, had gone to bathe in a stream on the outskirts of Bathinda on Sunday, May 25. While the other two returned safely, Mr. Irshad remained in the water longer and is believed to have drowned. He was later rescued in a critical condition and admitted to AIIMS Bathinda.

Despite medical intervention, Mr. Irshad’s condition deteriorated. He was declared dead at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, after his blood pressure failed to stabilise, hospital authorities confirmed.

Local police are said to be investigating the incident, though no foul play is suspected at this stage. The university administration and fellow students have expressed deep condolences over the untimely demise.

The body is expected to be transported to his native village today for the last rites.
