Ramban, June 1: A man was killed and three members of a family sustained injuries after a massive boulder hit an EECO van in the Trana area of Khari tehsil in Ramban district on Sunday.
According to officials, the vehicle bearing registration number JK19 A 6521 was on its way through the hilly stretch when a shooting stone, dislodged due to natural causes, rolled down and struck the van. The driver of the vehicle died on the spot due to the impact.
The injured passengers, all members of the same family, were initially shifted to Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Banihal and later referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag for specialised treatment.
The injured have been identified as Bahar Ahmed Malik, 28, son of Abdul Rehman Malik, a resident of Trana Khari, who suffered a fracture in his arm; Mansoora Begum, 22, wife of Bahar Ahmed, who sustained multiple fractures and trauma; and their 10-month-old son, Mohammad Saad, who sustained a head injury.
Authorities have taken cognisance of the incident, and further investigation is underway.
Frequent incidents of shooting stones and landslides have raised concerns over road safety in the mountainous stretches of the Chenab region, particularly during the rainy season or periods of geological instability.
