Elderly Man Dies by Suicide After Eid-ul-Azha Prayers in Deoria

Deoria, 8 June – In a distressing incident reported on the afternoon of Eid-ul-Azha, a 60-year-old man from Udhopur village under Gauri Bazar police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district allegedly died by suicide in what police believe to be a deeply personal and symbolic act of religious self-sacrifice.

The deceased, identified as Ish Mohammad, son of Barsati, had gone to offer namaaz at a local mosque on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. According to family members, after returning from prayers, he went into a hut near the house to rest. When called for food, his son Faiz Mohammad Ansari discovered him lying in a pool of blood with his throat slit.

He was immediately rushed to Maharshi Devraha Baba Medical College and later referred to BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, where doctors declared him brought dead.

A handwritten note, reportedly recovered from the site and addressed to local authorities, sheds light on the state of mind of the deceased. Written in Hindi, the note metaphorically likens human sacrifice to that of Eid’s ritual — “A man raises a goat like his own son and then sacrifices it. That too is a living being. I am offering my own sacrifice in the name of Allah and His Prophet.” He explicitly stated that no one should be blamed for his death and requested that his grave be placed at the spot where his body was found. He also mentioned that his burial should be done using soil from his school, a location of personal significance.

The note also included personal details, including his birth date — January 10, 1966, a Monday — and mentioned his mother’s name and land records, hinting at administrative grievances or a symbolic claim to his identity and rights.

Gauri Bazar Station House Officer Nanda Prasad confirmed that initial investigations do not suggest any foul play. “He had a history of frequent visits to the shrine at Kichaucha Sharif in Ambedkar Nagar, and appears to have been deeply spiritual,” he said.

Post-mortem and inquest procedures are underway as per legal protocol. Police are also verifying the authenticity of the suicide note and said all other possible angles are being thoroughly examined.
