JAMMU, August 29 — Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered a high-level enquiry into the recent landslide on the Mata Vaishno Devi Track, which claimed 34 lives and injured 18 pilgrims, according to official details accessed by The Chenab Times. While news reports have claimed huge number of casualties.
The three-member committee has been tasked with: (1) examining the causes and reasons behind the incident, identifying any lapses; (2) assessing the rescue and relief measures undertaken; and (3) suggesting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and measures to prevent future occurrences. The committee is required to submit its report within two weeks.
The Chenab Times learned that the enquiry follows widespread criticism over the management of the pilgrimage amid adverse weather warnings, with the incident occurring on August 26 due to heavy rainfall.
