Kishtwar, October 4 — The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has announced that it will undertake periodic flushing of the Dul Hasti Power Station reservoir in Kishtwar district, a routine maintenance exercise likely to cause a temporary rise in the water level of the Chenab River.
In an advisory issued to the public, NHPC authorities urged residents of Doda and Kishtwar districts, particularly those living along the riverbanks, to exercise caution and avoid venturing near the Chenab during the flushing operation. The advisory noted that increased water discharge could pose risks to individuals, vehicles, and livestock in low-lying areas adjacent to the river.
The management of the Dul Hasti Power Station stated that the flushing is a technical requirement to ensure the efficient functioning of the hydroelectric project and to maintain the safety of its infrastructure. The corporation has also coordinated with the local administration to disseminate precautionary information and ensure public safety during the process.
Officials warned that any person approaching the river or engaging in activities such as bathing, washing, or fishing during the operation would be doing so at their own risk. “The advisory aims to prevent any untoward incidents and to safeguard the lives and property of the public,” the statement said.
In Thathri, an announcement was made through a loudspeaker mounted on a vehicle on October 4, warning residents not to approach the banks of the Chenab River. The announcement stated, “Everyone is being made aware not to visit the banks of the Chenab River as Dul Hasti Dam waters will be released from 12 a.m. tonight until 12 a.m. tomorrow.” The public advisory was part of the administration’s effort to alert communities downstream and minimize potential risk during the reservoir flushing.
The Chenab River, a vital water source for the region and the backbone of multiple hydroelectric projects, often experiences fluctuations in water levels due to such maintenance operations. Authorities have appealed to residents to remain vigilant until the completion of the flushing exercise.
