Jammu, October 4 — The Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Disaster Management Authority (JKUTDMA) on Saturday morning issued an urgent weather advisory via SMS to residents, warning of the possibility of very heavy rainfall in multiple areas of the Jammu Division and South Kashmir. The alert, disseminated widely, anticipates the inclement weather to commence from the evening of October 5 and persist until the afternoon of October 7.
According to the advisory, the heavy downpour could lead to moderate to heavy snowfall in a few higher reaches of South Kashmir, the Pir Panjal Range, and the Chenab Valley. It also highlighted the risk of landslides and shooting stones at vulnerable locations, urging caution among travellers and inhabitants in these regions.
The message, sent as a precautionary measure, emphasised the need for preparedness in the face of potential disruptions. “Dial 112 for EMERGENCY,” it concluded, providing a direct line for assistance during any crisis.
This alert comes amid the transitional weather patterns typical of early October in the region, where the onset of winter often brings unpredictable precipitation. While no immediate evacuations have been mandated, residents in low-lying and mountainous areas are advised to stay informed through official channels.
Local authorities have been placed on high alert to monitor the situation, with disaster response teams ready to deploy if required. The advisory underscores the importance of community vigilance, particularly in areas prone to natural hazards like the Chenab Valley, which has historically experienced such events.
Further updates from the Meteorological Department or JKUTDMA are expected as the weather system develops. Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and secure their properties against potential flooding or snow accumulation.
