At least nine people died and 29 others were injured in a massive explosion at Nowgam police station late Friday night, when authorities were handling explosives seized from a terror module in Faridabad, Haryana, officials confirmed.
The blast occurred around 10:30 p.m. while police officers and a Forensic Science Laboratory team were extracting samples from approximately 3,000 kg of ammonium nitrate and other materials stored at the station, according to details received by The Chenab Times. Most fatalities were among police personnel and forensic officials, with two Srinagar administration officials also killed.
The injured were evacuated to the Indian Army’s 92 Base Hospital and Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar. The site was cordoned off, with senior police and security officials arriving to oversee operations, including sweeps by sniffer dogs. The explosion damaged the station building, several vehicles, and triggered smaller secondary blasts.
Nowgam police station led the investigation into pro-Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) posters spotted in the area on October 19, 2025, which threatened attacks on security forces and “outsiders.” The probe, involving CCTV analysis, resulted in arrests starting with locals Arif Nisar Dar, Yasir-ul-Ashraf, and Maqsood Ahmad Dar, and uncovered a “white-collar terror ecosystem” of radicalized professionals linked to Pakistan-based handlers.
Key arrests included Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather on October 27, from whom an assault rifle was recovered at Government Medical College in Anantnag. His interrogation revealed Dr. Muzammil Shakeel (also known as Muzammil Ganaie or Ahmad Ganaie) at Al-Falah Medical College in Faridabad, leading to the seizure of the explosives on November 5, along with electronic components, timers, and metal sheets. Dr. Shaheen Saeed, another colleague, was arrested the same day.
The module’s activities are suspected in the November 10 car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort, which killed 13 and injured over 20, with Dr. Umar Nabi identified as the driver of the Hyundai i20 used in the attack. Investigators believe the Delhi blast involved a poorly assembled improvised explosive device (IED), possibly triggered by panic after the Faridabad seizure. A core trio—Muzammil Ganaie, Umar Nabi, and absconding Dr. Muzzaffar Rather—allegedly orchestrated the plot, with Dr. Adeel Rather’s role under scrutiny.
Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Akshay Labroo visited the injured at hospitals. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is involved in the broader probe. No further updates on the casualties or investigation were immediately available.
