Social media platform X has begun displaying country of origin labels on user profiles as part of a new transparency feature, allowing anyone to view the location associated with any account.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the rollout of the “About this account” feature started on November 21, 2025, and is visible to select users. The information appears when users click on the join date in a profile’s bio section.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, announced the initiative earlier in the month. The labels show the country where the account is based, along with details such as the original join date, number of username changes and the app store connection, such as the U.S. App Store or Google Play.
Bier stated that the feature aims to help users verify content authenticity amid concerns over misinformation and foreign influence. “When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity. This is critical to getting a pulse on important issues happening in the world,” Bier said, according to reports.
Users can opt to display their exact country or a broader geographical region, with the specific country set as the default. Accounts accessed via VPN may show a disclaimer noting potential inaccuracy.
The update has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters argue it will expose accounts spreading propaganda or impersonating users from other regions, with one user posting on X, “I’m tired of accounts from India and Russia meddling with American affairs.” Others express concerns over potential increases in abuse or discrimination based on nationality.
X has not confirmed a full rollout timeline. The platform previously tested the feature with employees before expanding access.
