Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra died at his residence in Mumbai on Monday at the age of 89, following a period of recovery from respiratory issues.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the actor, born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol, passed away at his Juhu bungalow. He had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital earlier in November for breathing difficulties and was discharged on November 12 after stabilisation.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the cause of death has not been officially disclosed, though reports indicate it followed a month-long battle with age-related health problems. An ambulance was spotted at his home on the morning of November 24.

Dharmendra, known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, appeared in over 300 films spanning six decades. His career began with the 1960 film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and included hits like Phool Aur Patthar and action epics. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2012. His final film, Ikkis, is scheduled for release on December 25, 2025.

The last rites were performed at Pawan Hans Crematorium in Mumbai, with family members including wife Hema Malini, sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, and daughters Esha and Ahana Deol present. Celebrities such as Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt attended the funeral.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute, calling Dharmendra a “towering figure of Indian cinema” who “brought charm and depth to every role.” Filmmaker Karan Johar described the loss as “the end of an era.”

Dharmendra is survived by his two wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and six children. Earlier false reports of his death on November 11 were denied by his family.
