A resident of Dhampur in Bijnor district lost ₹31,000 after clicking on a malicious wedding invitation link received on WhatsApp, police said on Saturday.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Dr Omprakash Chauhan fell victim to the cyber fraud when he opened the link disguised as a digital wedding card. The file, an APK (Android application package), instantly gave fraudsters remote control of his phone and transferred ₹31,000 to an account identified as “Cyber Thakur”.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the malware also began automatically forwarding the same fraudulent invitation to all contacts in the victim’s phone.
Bijnor Cybercrime Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
Police have warned the public not to download or install APK files sent by unknown numbers, especially those disguised as wedding invitations, greeting cards or event links. Citizens have also been advised never to share OTPs and to enable two-factor authentication on banking and social media accounts.
Authorities said such scams are rising during the ongoing wedding season across the country.
