Young writer Suhail Ahmad, known as Raj Soub, draws on Sufi traditions in verses that address spiritual themes and everyday life
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Suhail Ahmad, who writes under the pen name Raj Soub and resides in Veersiran near Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, is receiving notice in local literary gatherings for his Sufi-influenced poetry.
Raj Soub began writing poetry more consistently in 2021. He describes the work as a serious pursuit rather than a pastime, aiming to express spiritual concepts in straightforward, accessible language. His verses draw from the teachings of Sufi figures, particularly Shah Rasheed Sahib, and centre on themes of inner peace, devotion to Allah, patience, kindness, purity of heart, and reliance on divine will.
The poet’s style avoids elaborate ornamentation, favouring direct and reflective expression that connects personal experience with broader spiritual ideas. His writing reflects the cultural and geographic context of Kashmir, incorporating local elements while addressing universal emotions such as love, faith, and human unity.
Raj Soub has participated in recent mushairas and cultural events in Srinagar and surrounding areas, where his recitations have been noted by attendees. At one such gathering in Srinagar, literature enthusiast Aisha Bhat remarked that his poetry serves as a reminder of Kashmir’s longstanding Sufi heritage.
The emergence of Raj Soub coincides with renewed interest in traditional Kashmiri poetic forms amid contemporary challenges. His work is seen by some observers as an effort to link historical spiritual wisdom with present-day realities, offering a perspective focused on calm and introspection in a period of rapid change.
As a resident of the Pahalgam area, known for its natural surroundings and tourist presence, Raj Soub continues to write and share his poetry through local platforms and events in the Kashmir Valley.
