Jammu and Kashmir Government Appoints Three Law Officers for High Court’s Srinagar Wing

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has appointed three advocates as Law Officers for the Srinagar wing of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, according to a government order issued on Saturday.

The Chenab Times has learned that the appointments include one Additional Advocate General and two Deputy Advocate Generals. Shabaz Sikandar Mir has been appointed as Additional Advocate General, while Tariq Ahmad Lone and GN Sofi will serve as Deputy Advocate Generals. This development pertains to the functioning of the judicial administration within the Union Territory.

The appointments are outlined in Government Order No. 3957-JK (LD) of 2026, dated March 28. The order specifies that the terms and conditions of these appointments will be governed by existing rules and stipulations previously laid down in government orders from 2015, 2017, and 2019. These legal provisions are designed to ensure transparency and adherence to established procedures in the appointment of legal representatives for the government.

The tenure for the newly appointed Law Officers has been set at one year. This period may be extended based on their performance and the satisfaction of the appointing authority. The appointments are also contingent upon the individuals providing necessary eligibility documents, as mandated by Notification SRO 98 of 2016. This ensures that all appointed officers meet the required professional and administrative standards.

Furthermore, the order states that these appointments are subject to any directives that may arise from the ongoing Public Interest Litigation (PIL) titled Sushil Chandel vs Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and others. This condition highlights the administration’s adherence to judicial oversight and responsiveness to court proceedings.

In line with administrative guidelines, the appointed Law Officers have been instructed to submit daily reports on case-related information through the Director Litigation Kashmir. They are also required to provide fortnightly and weekly progress reports to the Law Department in the prescribed formats. These reporting mechanisms are intended to maintain efficient case management and departmental oversight.
