Jammu and Kashmir Government Denies Special Tourism Package for Sonamarg

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has stated that no specific tourism development package has been sanctioned for the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg at present.

The Chenab Times has learned that in response to a starred question posed by MLA Mian Mehar Ali in the Legislative Assembly, the administration clarified that while a dedicated package is absent, the development and upkeep of tourism infrastructure, parks, and associated facilities in Sonamarg are being undertaken through the approved Capital Expenditure (Capex) Plan.

During the financial year 2025-26, the relevant department has initiated 27 projects in Sonamarg with an approved outlay of Rs 20.55 crore. An amount of Rs 5.95 crore has already been disbursed from the allocated Rs 7.00 crore under Capex 2025-26 for the execution of these works.

The government further informed the assembly that two significant infrastructure projects are currently in progress to improve environmental management and the overall appearance of the tourist spot. These include the installation of a Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) Phase-I, with an approved cost of Rs 7.10 crore, aimed at ensuring proper treatment of wastewater and protecting the ecologically sensitive Sonamarg region. Additionally, ornamental see-through fencing is being erected around the main bowl and Golden Glory/Eco Park at a cost of Rs 3.70 crore. This fencing is intended to regulate visitor flow, safeguard landscaped areas, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the destination.

The government also indicated that STP Phase-II, with an estimated cost of Rs 9.60 crore, is under consideration for inclusion in the Capex Plan. These initiatives are expected to bolster the tourism infrastructure and improve environmental sustainability in Sonamarg.

In reply to a separate query seeking details on any special package works, allocated funds, and timelines, the government provided a “nil” response, reiterating that no such distinct package has been sanctioned for Sonamarg to date.
