WASHINGTON, March 28 – A group dedicated to interaction with Russia’s State Duma is set to be created within the United States Congress, according to Vyacheslav Nikonov, a member of the United Russia party and first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs.
The Chenab Times has learned that Nikonov led a delegation of five Russian lawmakers during a visit to the United States this week. The delegation held meetings with their counterparts in the US Congress and officials from the US administration in Washington on Thursday and Friday.
Nikonov stated that a previously existing, but largely inactive, group for relations with the US Congress within the State Duma is now becoming operational. He further indicated that a reciprocal group focused on relations with the State Duma will be established in the US Congress. These remarks were made to reporters in Washington following the conclusion of the Russian parliamentary delegation’s visit.
During their discussions, the Russian parliamentary delegation engaged with their American counterparts on a broad spectrum of issues. These included vital topics such as strategic stability and the ongoing situation in Ukraine. However, Nikonov cautioned that no significant breakthroughs should be anticipated from this initial visit by the delegation.
The United States has expressed interest in mitigating existing barriers in relations, but Nikonov acknowledged that this process is expected to be gradual and not immediate.
