New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Ayush has approved a proposal to establish 100 herbal gardens in schools across the Jammu Division, marking a significant initiative to promote awareness and conservation of medicinal plants. The project, allocated a budget of Rs 53 lakh, aims to integrate traditional knowledge of medicinal plants into the school curriculum.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the initiative will see ten schools in each district of the Jammu Division develop dedicated herbal gardens. This project received approval following recommendations from the Directorate of Ayush, Jammu & Kashmir, in conjunction with the J&K Medicinal Plants Board. The primary objective is to provide students with practical, hands-on experience in identifying, cultivating, and understanding the uses of various medicinal plants, fostering a deeper connection with nature and traditional healthcare systems.

The Directorate of School Education, Jammu, has identified the 100 schools that will participate in this program. These gardens are intended to serve as interactive learning environments, complementing classroom education with experiential learning. Students are expected to gain valuable insights into the importance of plant biodiversity and its role in maintaining health and well-being.

Dr. Ajay Kumar Tikoo, Director Ayush, J&K, and CEO of the J&K Medicinal Plants Board, described the approval as a pivotal moment. He highlighted that the project embodies a forward-thinking approach to synergize education with indigenous knowledge systems. Dr. Tikoo expressed optimism that these herbal gardens will transform into hubs for practical learning, encouraging students to actively engage with natural resources and wellness practices. The initiative is also geared towards cultivating an understanding of preventive healthcare, promoting environmental stewardship, and ensuring the preservation of crucial plant species.

Furthermore, the project is anticipated to instill in young minds an appreciation for the AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) systems of medicine and the importance of safeguarding ancestral knowledge for future generations. Dr. Tikoo extended his gratitude to Sakeena Itoo, Minister for Health and Medical Education, for her consistent support that was instrumental in securing the project’s approval. He also acknowledged the valuable guidance and support provided by M. Raju, Commissioner Secretary of the Health and Medical Education Department.
