JAMMU: An inmate died on Sunday at a police station in Jammu after complaining of severe stomach pain, prompting authorities to order a magisterial inquiry into the incident. The deceased has been identified as Parveen Kumar, a resident of Panipat, Haryana.

The Chenab Times has learned that Kumar was arrested in connection with a case registered under FIR No. 67/2026 of Police Station Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. He was apprehended along with four other individuals in Kolkata and was brought to Jammu on March 25, 2026, on transit remand. All five accused were on police remand until March 30, 2026.

According to police officials, Kumar developed severe stomach pain on Sunday. He was immediately rushed to the Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar for treatment. Doctors at the hospital declared him dead shortly after his arrival. Officials stated that regular medical examinations of the accused were conducted while in police custody and all necessary precautions were taken.

A medical examination of Kumar was conducted earlier on Sunday from Police Hospital Jammu. However, he later complained of intense stomach pain, leading to his transfer to the Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar.

A board of doctors at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu is conducting a post-mortem examination. The family of the deceased has been informed, and the post-mortem will be carried out in the presence of family members and an Executive Magistrate. Police have also stated that all relevant CCTV footage and other evidence from the police station are being preserved.

In response to the death, police have initiated inquest proceedings. The District Magistrate of Jammu has been requested to launch a separate magisterial inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kumar’s death while in police custody.
