Jammu Marathon Marks New Era of Tourism and Development in Jammu and Kashmir

JAMMU, March 29: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha stated on Sunday that the Jammu Marathon symbolizes a profound transformation in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019, positioning the Union Territory as a global destination for major events.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Sinha was speaking at a felicitation ceremony for the Jammu Marathon held at MA Stadium in Jammu. The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that peace and improved conditions have enabled the UT to host world-class events, reclaiming its place on the global stage after seven decades.

The inaugural International Half Marathon in Jammu, organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department, attracted over 3000 runners from across India and abroad. The event featured 21 km, 10 km, and 5 km race categories.

Lieutenant Governor Sinha described the Jammu Marathon as a historic milestone that has firmly placed Jammu on the global running map. He projected that the success of this large-scale event would lead to an increase in tourism for Jammu, benefiting local trade and businesses and ushering in an era of comprehensive development.

He drew a parallel between the spirit of a marathon runner, focused on the next step rather than trophies, and the progress of Jammu and Kashmir. Sinha noted that since 2019, the Union Territory has advanced incrementally, forging a new identity and transforming into a hub of peace and prosperity capable of hosting international sporting events, including marathons and cricket tournaments.

The Lieutenant Governor recalled that the concept of the Kashmir Marathon, conceived in December 2023, aimed not only to organize a race but also to signify the arrival of a new Jammu and Kashmir on the international sporting scene. He credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for showcasing the region’s extensive tourism potential globally.

Sinha expressed that long-standing dreams and aspirations are now becoming a reality in Jammu and Kashmir. He observed that participants of the Jammu Marathon had discovered new internal experiences while also witnessing the significant changes occurring within the region.

The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that driven by the unwavering resolve of its citizens, the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory is setting new benchmarks in development. He noted a renewed commitment taking root in the sporting arena and expressed satisfaction that the Fit India movement is inspiring a new sporting revolution in Jammu and Kashmir.

Among those present at the felicitation ceremony were Minister for Youth Services & Sports Satish Sharma, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary Tourism Department Dr. Ashish Chandra Verma, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, and IGP Jammu Bhim Sen Tuti. Senior officials from the civil and police administration also attended. Prominent figures from the film industry, including actors Milind Soman and Gul Panag, along with noted citizens and sportspersons, were also in attendance.
