Jammu and Kashmir Govt Confirms Reservation Report Submitted to Lieutenant Governor

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has stated that the Cabinet Subcommittee’s report on reservation policies has been submitted to the Lieutenant Governor, completing the administration’s role in the process. Minister Sakeena Itoo announced that the subcommittee, tasked with addressing concerns regarding reservation policies, has finalized its findings after consultations with various stakeholders.

Cabinet Fulfills Role on Reservation Issue

According to details received by The Chenab Times, Minister Sakeena Itoo informed reporters in Jammu that the government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has fulfilled its responsibilities concerning the reservation issue. The Cabinet Subcommittee was established following representations from numerous deputations and aspirants who had raised concerns about existing reservation policies. The subcommittee was mandated to submit its report within a six-month timeframe, a task that has now been completed and approved by the Cabinet through a majority decision.

Ms. Itoo explained the procedural changes implemented under the Union Territory framework, noting that Cabinet decisions now necessitate the approval of the Lieutenant Governor before they can be officially announced. She contrasted this with the previous system during the statehood period, where Cabinet decisions were shared with the public more immediately. Under the current administrative structure, once an agenda item is approved by the Cabinet, it is forwarded to the Lieutenant Governor for final endorsement before any communication can be made.

The Minister emphasized that the subcommittee engaged in comprehensive consultations with all parties involved in reservation matters. She stated, “The Cabinet has done its part, and now the report is with the Lieutenant Governor. If opposition members have concerns, they should address the authority responsible for final approval.” This indicates that further action or public disclosure of the report’s contents rests with the Lieutenant Governor’s office.

Welfare Measures Highlighted

In addition to the reservation report, Minister Itoo also provided an update on various welfare initiatives undertaken by the government. Despite facing budgetary constraints, the administration has implemented several measures aimed at supporting vulnerable sections of the population. Notably, the marriage assistance scheme has seen an increase in its financial aid, raised from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000. Furthermore, pensions for the elderly, widows, and persons with disabilities have also been enhanced.

The current budget includes provisions for a 25 percent increase in disability pensions, which is currently in the process of implementation. The government has expressed its commitment to ensuring the timely disbursement of these pensions and to effectively channeling support to those most in need. The focus remains on executing these welfare programs under the guidance of the Chief Minister, ensuring that benefits reach eligible beneficiaries without delay.
